The Holy Hour

A bit of context

In the garden, the night before He died, Jesus asked His friends for one thing, to stay awake with Him for a single hour, and they fell asleep. Could you not watch one hour with Me?

Centuries later He made the same request to St. Margaret Mary, asking her to keep Him company in the loneliness of that night and to make up in love for the times He is left alone. That is the Holy Hour, an hour spent with Jesus, most powerfully before the Blessed Sacrament, where He is truly present in Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

If an hour sounds like a lot, start with fifteen minutes, because the point is not the clock, the point is that you came, and He is there.

Let's Pray

There is no script, because this is time with Someone who loves you, not a performance, but if you would like a simple shape to follow, here is one.

1. Arrive and settle. 

If you can, go to a church or chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is present. Sit, breathe, and let the noise in your head settle. You do not have to say anything yet.

2. Adore. 

Begin by simply acknowledging Him.

Jesus, You are here, and I am here with You. That is enough to start.

3. Give thanks. 

Name a few good things, out loud or in your heart, because gratitude opens the door.

4. Say you are sorry. 

Bring Him the things you regret. You do not need fancy words. I am sorry. Have mercy on me. He already knows, and He already loves you.

5. Ask. 

Now bring Him everything you are carrying, the people you love and the worries that keep you up, and lay them at His feet, one by one.

6. Then stop talking, and just be with Him.

This is the heart of the hour. Read a few lines of a Gospel, maybe the night in the garden (Matthew 26), or pray a rosary if it helps, or simply sit in silence and let Him look at you with love. Nothing has to happen, and something always does.

7. Before you leave, thank Him for the time, and tell Him you will be back.
